In the days that followed the recent mainstream media’s reporting of the NSA’s not so shocking PRISM surveillance program, Amazon.com sales of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, 1984, shot up and at one point showed an increase of almost 7000% within just a 24 hour period. This huge initial burst of sales has admittedly now tailed off but the book, at the time of writing, still shows a 129% increase in sales with a rank of just 64 overall.
Obviously, those within conspiracy circles have been aware for some time now of how the expanding tentacles of government surveillance are steadily laying the foundations for a totalitarian surveillance state, with many (myself included) even referring to Orwell’s 1984 as a means to illustrate the closing gap between what was Orwellian fiction and what is now quickly becoming Orwellian fact. Nevertheless, it is still encouraging to see people finally putting the pieces of the conspiratorial puzzle together, even if they are still ironically reliant on their telescreens to make that connection for them.
As many attempting to expose the totalitarian tiptoe have said before, 1984 was not supposed to be an instruction manual and in view of the recent ‘disclosure’ of the American government’s corporate colluding in order to underhandedly snoop on it’s citizens, this point could not be any more pertinent than it is right now.
